The How To Guide to CouchSurfing

By Bas Johnson

Couchsurfing is a large community of people that revolves around the couchsurfing.org website. The idea behind couch surfing is that you register (for free), make a profile and then host people at your place or travel to other places where people will host you.

The amazing thing about couchsurfing is that what comes around goes around. If somebody stays at your place and acts rudely and out of line, you can leave a reference on their profile explaining exactly what kind of guest they are and they can NOT delete the write up. They can also do the same to you if you're a jerk! So treat people well or it will come back to haunt you and prevent you from surfing and hosting in the future.

When you surf or host, make sure to take a very careful look at the person's profile. Some people have negative feedback (it's rare) and others simply don't have any feedback at all.

As an FYI, there are a lot of gay couchsurfers and hosts who are looking for easy sex via couchsurfing. You can usually point them out by visiting their profile. They'll be members of "queer couchsurfing" or drop hints about what they're looking for in their profiles. I think there's nothing wrong with putting it out there but if this kind of situation is something you don't want to potentially have to dispel, then simply choose another host or surfer!

Couch surfing is a world wide community and you can surf or host in virtually any country ranging from central america to Canada to Japan and beyond.

When searching for couches, make sure you're messaging 3 or more people so that you're more likely to find a place to stay in time. If multiple people respond, you'll also have a few options and be able to take the best one.

A word about hooking up with surfers/hosts: it happens! I think we're all human and it's perfectly normal that we act upon our impulses when we connect with somebody. But keep it light and no pressure so couchsurfing can maintain its good reputation and so that everybody can make the most out of this wonderful system.

On that note, be as polite and respectful as possible when hosting and surfing. You don't owe the person food or a night on the town or anything beyond water and use of the bathroom. But at the same time, being a good host is good karma and more fun. Try to add good vibes whenever you host or stay. The universe will reciprocate.

Have fun, use common sense and be safe and you'll find couchsurfing to be an amazing experience!
