The Differences in Pool Cues

By Nikita Miller

The price and look of a pool cue are what most pool players base their purchases on when buying a new cue. It's understandable to use these considerations. But there are a lot of things to consider when you want to choose a good pool cue. How a cue looks is not the most important factor but rather whether it is of good quality and if it will perform well for you. Additional factors include where you live and the conditions where you will keep your cue. Cues can be made from different materials, some of which stand up to high temperatures and humidity better than others. The following are some important aspects about pool cues that you should know about.

There are three primary types of snooker and pool cues. Initially, each sort measures at approximately 57 in total length. The simplest kind of cue used in these two games is the widespread one-piece cue. This is what you generally come across in pool halls and bars. The taper, from the butt end to the tip, is even and uniform the entire distance. Then there is the common breakdown or two-piece cue which unscrews in the center of the cue. The breakdown characteristic makes it convenient for transporting and carrying around. The preceding kind is mostly used by snooker players, and it is an alternative to the two-piece cue. The snooker cue breaks down quite close to the butt end of the cue, in the region of 12 to 16 inches from the end.

A cue that is made to be shorter and lighter than the average cue is called a jump cue. A jump cue will be typically about 12 ounces, or maybe even less, plus they have a harder than average tip. Another specialized type of cue is one you are probably more familiar with - the break cue. A lot of break cues can easily be modified to become a jump cue. The reason this is possible is that many break cues have an attachment on the butt end of the cue. after you remove the attachment what you have left over is an acceptable jump cue.

Most high quality pool cues are made using hard rock maple wood with straight grains. This type of wood is typically used to make the shaft of the cue. The snooker cue, however, is typically made from ash wood. While this is not always the case, the majority of the time, it is. Other attributes of high quality cues include the material used for the cue butt. Plus you will find cues that have highly artistic designs in them. Some highly decorative cues aren't meant to be used for play but rather displayed proudly as a collector's item.
