Knowing The Golden Era Of Beechworth Real Estate

By Karl Larkins

Beechworth, Australia is a small community that sits in the north eastern region of Victoria. As an historical area, the community comes together to promote visitors and vacationers to enhance the economy. Located in a moderate climate, the town is well known for providing a number of annual events, recreational and activities catering to children and adults equally. The worth of Beechworth real estate linger in its historical past.

The earliest settlers to this area were aboriginal people, who left a legacy of painted stories in the local caves. By the 1800s, sheepherders tended their sheep on this grassland known only as Mayday Hill. In 1852, by a creek where the sheep grazed, gold was discovered. An almost immediate rush of people flooded into the region, bringing their picks and shovels, and a determination to find gold. Within months the immediate area sustained over 8000 prospectors, miners and the followers. In 1853, as a town was beginning to grow, a government land evaluator legally changed the name of the settlement to Beechworth.

During the period 1852 through 1866 over several billion dollars (at 21st century rates) worth of gold was dug, sluiced and panned from the creeks and hills around Beechworth. Fortunes were certainly made in the gold fields, as it was reported that one lucky party of men walked away with 50 pounds of gold that had been found by them in one week.

The rush brought gold seekers, from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Canada, the United States and China to the goldfield called the Ovens. As the town grew, and Beechworth prosperity advanced, shops, banks, liveries, and other services blossomed. A refined community developed from the original rabble and temporary population, and with it education, religion, medical care and penal facilities were built. The Beechworth Cemetery is now home to many a participant of the local colorful past.

In the local region, the town is known as The Elegant Dame, which pays compliment to the colorful charms of its late 1800s traditional and elegantly styled city center store fronts and residences. The town serves as a center for year round attractions providing festivals, annual and one-time events, pedestrian and vehicle tours, as well as seasonal sports. Businesses include cultural and historical displays, museums, restaurants, art merchants and artisans, wineries, accommodations, tourist information centers and public transportation. As an excellent home for those who commute to larger cities, Beechworth has access to airports, rail stations and bus stations. Taxi cabs are available in town.

Beechworth land and properties are held by many of the local residents and regional investors. Most of these owners have retained ownership as a long term investment, and are not currently interested in selling their land or houses. On the other hand, as markets in the larger cities heat up, new buyers, looking for an escape, are prompting a number of local properties to be released to the market. Some of the properties being sold currently are new homes built on newly subdivided land.

The predominance of buildings in downtown Beechworth were constructed in the late 19th century. These edifices are covered by a legacy of laws that require standards be met as a condition of ownership. Anyone who wants to buy such a property should first discuss, with an expert, the responsibilities of owning a historical building. Some of the historical buildings disallow changes being made to the structure. Older houses usually do not have restrictions for change, but it is prudent to check this requirement with the experts, as well.

No matter what you see in Beechworth Real Estate, it is a community that treasures its past. Citizens participate in events, year round, which define the values of its local history. Located in a region of temperate climate, it affords activities for every season within a close distance. Catering to its visitors is job one, and they do it with a smile.
