The search for gold has allured many into taking its path. It is a fun path filled with adventure and hard work. In many ways it's a recreational activity as well. But if you're prospecting for gold not just for the sake of it and want to do it as a serious process, then you can utilize some of the more complicated gold panning methods. Such methods get better results than the simple methods.
One method that has been the very popular through the ages is the standard gold panning method. A pan that is 16 inch in diameter and 2.5 inch in depth is used generally. It comes in many sizes and people buy one that is most comfortable for them. But if you want to search a large amount of gravel, then a small pan won't do the trick as it may take a long time. Here a big pan would be more useful. Some use iron pans which turn blue when heated. This helps the user to quickly spot the gold.
Faster speed and accuracy at gold panning will only come through experience and that too lots of it. An experienced prospector can sift through 2.5 yards of gravel in one day. Some even come up with new and interesting methods. Some use mercury and magnetite in their mining methods when they are searching for gold in dry gravel. The methods are complicated and would be suitable only for a sizable amount of gold deposit.
One such method is the potato method. This method not only helps you in obtaining gold but it also allows you to recover the mercury. A potato is cut into two and one piece is hollowed out to create a depression in the piece that is bigger than the amalgam. The amalgam is kept on a pan and the potato is placed on top of it. Heating the pan for 15-20 min will cause the mercury to transfer into the potato leaving the gold in the depression of the potato.
Retorting is another method that is used to remove mercury. This method consists of a pipe shaped device in which the amalgam is placed into. The device is heated and this heat vaporizes the mercury which then slowly passes through a condenser pipe resulting in the formation and collection of liquid mercury.
