Many years ago as a young man I learned that using a little machine called a WaterPik is one of the best things that one can do to have good results with dental hygiene. First of all, this author has no connection with company that sells and markets this product. I am just a long time user of the device and have had good results.
Having put up with a bad toothache for a while and hoping it would disappear on one occasion, I was forced to see a dentist when it did not. He could tell I had been neglecting my teeth, and he told me I should get a small machine called a WaterPik, and he also said that if I had been using one I would not be getting the root canal that he was about to administer. He said that if all his patients would make a habit of using one, they would cut their dental problems in half or more.
I have in fact been using one of these machines for many years at this point, and I have not had a new cavity in at least twenty five years. Most of the dental work done on my mouth in recent times has been to fix old fillings that have worn out. I find that brushing twice a day, flossing at least once daily, and using the WaterPik machine keeps my teeth in good shape. On top of that I need to go into the dentist's office every six months for a checkup and a cleaning by a dental hygienist.
I was not one of those lucky people who never had many cavities. To the contrary, I developed cavities very easily and had a lot of them as a child, even in my baby teeth. My mouth is just prone to tooth decay it seems. I always had fairly large buildups of tartar on my teeth that needed to be removed at each cleaning by a hygienist. This still exists to a small extent today, even though the use of the WaterPik machine has made a big improvement.
Of course dental plaque is constantly being created in the mouth and needs to be removed every day to avoid buildup. The easiest thing to do is to develop a habit of brushing every day and using dental floss. Those efforts, and the use of a WaterPik, along with semiannual teeth cleanings by a hygienist, will take care of the dental hygiene needs of most people. And while the WaterPik cleans between teeth and removes plaque, its pulsating stream of water will massage the gums and keep them healthy as well.
