Finding The Cheapest Hotels In Sydney For Cheapskate Visitors

By Howard Rudd

The fact that there are so many cheap hotels actually makes it more difficult to find the cheapest hotels in Sydney. There are a few things cheapskates can do which might be helpful in this quest. As a start, stop believing it when a hotel goes around claiming to be the cheapest one.

Not because they're trying to pull a fast one, but because the rates these hotels offer are very flexible. Persistent travelers are likely to get lower rates based on personal or telephone contact. Many hotels in the same location within Sydney compete to offer the lowest rate.

It helps to be able to talk to each one personally or on the phone to see how low they're willing to go. The online rates on the hotel website or quoted by an OTA (online travel agency) simply can't match this haggling. There's also the uncertainty over rates for specific dates, which can vary based on season, week-days or weekend, holidays and festivals, etc. The point here is that it's possible to get lower rates than what one sees on the web.

Another important aspect is the exact location within Sydney, because there are well over 320 hotels and some hotels in some areas are famous for their low budget rates. The central business district (CBD) is always good for any and every kind of traveler, including budget travelers. In fact, it's quite safe to say that almost all the cheapest hotels in Sydney will either be in the CBD or be within easy reach.

Another possibility is the Style Mile. Famous for its fashion sense and shopping, it also has some extremely affordable and chic hotels on Oxford Street in Paddington and Hyde Park. These hotels are definitely a value deal for visitors with amenities that aren't usually found in cheap hotels.

Travelers staying in a cheap Oxford St. Hotel can expect everything from free wifi internet to a complimentary breakfast and swimming pool, onsite bar and lounge with a restaurant, and maybe also a fitness centre. The biggest positive is, of course, the location with Australia's most famous shopping zone right outside the hotel's door.

The Haymarket and Kings Cross are two more places where travelers will easily find a budget hotel. Kings Cross especially is a place that's near perfect for budget travelers. Cheap hotels are surrounded with restaurants, nightclubs, bars and all kinds of entertainment. The Sydney attractions, as always, are just a short hop away.

Moving to the suburbs will open up even more choices, probably a lot cheaper than in and around the CBD. The best of these would be the Eastern suburbs, such as in Bondi. Another choice would be Manly, in the Northern suburbs. These are both just a short drive out of the city centre, so it's not really much of a problem.

Bottomline - it's not really so hard to find the cheapest hotels in Sydney, for those who know where to look. Focus on these areas mentioned above, and like as not the inner cheapskate will be happy with the ultimate choice. Again, please note that rates vary depending on the date and period, so it's best to do some advance planning and find the right date for a trip down under.
