2010 Social Media Trendsetters

By Chris Ormiston

There have been many mainstream social media trends that took place during 2010. It truly was a year of record numbers, for both already established social media platforms and newly emerging ones. For example, according to Nielsen Online, Twitter was one of the biggest winners, growing more than 1,300% in February of 2010, where they added roughly 7 million users to their infrastructure. In the same respect, let's not forget about two major players in the game, Facebook and Myspace. Over the past year, Myspace has seen seriously declines in its membership base, whereas Facebook took over the top spot. It's been a year for the records indeed. So let's take a look at some of the social media trends that defined the past year.

Speaking of Twitter, it's becoming more commonplace for large companies to use this website to provide customer support. For example, Best Buy has a twitter account called Twelpforce. It's a network of friendly customer support representatives that offer support via tweeting. Any customer can sign up and can easily gain substantial support online. Expect to see this trend become more commonplace over the years to come.

Social media and networking has become more fun. Newer social media platforms, such as an emerging site called Foursquare, are changing the social media game forever. They have made their sites more like a game, in fact, where users are encouraged to network online by being offered perks. Some of these perks include added account features and other online tweaks to their profiles.

Workplaces are adding social media policies to their employee manuals. Perhaps one of the most notable social media trends of 2010 is that employees have to mind their manners when using such sites. Now companies are looking at the social media accounts of their employees and adding policies that are strictly enforced. Some people have even lost their jobs for posting inappropriate content online.

Sharing what you find online is quickly becoming the mainstay for most major websites and online mediums. Have you ever noticed that little share tab or box on websites, which usually hovers near the top of the content? That's a powerful social media tool that allows you to share your findings on most major social media sites that you may have an account on by simply clicking a button. This newly added feature easily tops the list as one of the neatest social media trends of 2010.
