Portrait Photographer: Tips on Indoor Portrait Photography

By Ben Bender

If you are a wedding photographer who happens to have practiced your skills in outdoor shot; then perhaps it is high time that you also develop your indoor shooting skills. Should you need mastery in this aspect of photography, then you might as well consider these tips:

Tip number 1: When doing a portrait photo, a velvet black background will get you started with your photo shoot. However, should you decide to embark on this, you must expect to do a lot of practice. In order for a skill to be developed, you must be able to do a lot of trial shots.

Tip number 2: The lighting is a very essential aspect when it comes to photography. Remember that too much light will not have a very good effect on your subject. Asian faces, specifically of Singaporean, will not look good on hard light. The best lighting effect will make a very good photo. Keep adjusting the light to produce a good photo.

Tip 3: Using a tripod is necessary so you don't have to move around and avoid blurring the images with your hand movement. With portrait photography, all you need to do is adjust your tripod for the best angle.

Tip 4: Put your digital camera on fast shutter speed. A famous portrait photographer would put his shutter speed at 1/160 sec at f/2.8, ISO500. And have a longer focal length. Normally, you should use 80-200mm f/2.8 lens and use 145mm for the best indoor photography shots.

A shoot may be finalized upon after a series of tries. Lighting is observed and achieved if you do a lot of sample shots. Adjustments may be made right after you take these samples.

Tip 6: Always use a reflector when doing portraits, the light is too harsh for the face and you will need a reflector to soften the lighting effect. It may not be visible to the eye but once you see the sample shots, you will see a big difference.

Keep in mind that in any endeavor, practice would always lead to perfection. So follow these tips and you will be able to take and develop great indoor portraits. Furthermore, Singapore always has good portrait photographers.
