Some of ones fondest memories are of the days gone by when all the Circus Animals came to town. Everybody was excited, especially the school children. Most of them would get to see the show at some time before the big show left town. There was always a special day when the schools would take the children.
You wont see these animals in their natural habitat, by any means, but just to see many of them at all is more than some folks would ever have an opportunity to do. It may be said that seeing them in a zoo environment would be better, but many zoos do not house their wild creatures in their natural habitat either. So, take your choice, see them on the move, performing in the big top, or calm and sedate in the zoo.
The next best way to observe these wild creatures is on a safari in Africa, perhaps. Honestly, a trip to the bog top extravaganza is much more likely, with less preparation and expense involved. Most of the wild things in the three-rings have been trained to do a stunt or to act in a certain way. This may not be a natural occurrence for the animal but if not carried to a ridiculous length, can be entertaining.
Not only were animals found in the big top, but also clowns, acrobats and wire-walking entertainers. This was sometimes made more thrilling by the high swingers and wire-walkers performing with no net and even over the cage filled with lions and tigers. Talk about exciting, this would give you the adrenaline rush you had hoped for.
These cages holding the meat-eaters were not far from the front row in the big tent and if you were lucky enough to be seated there, your view was fantastic. Being that close you could see the big cats being herded down long steel-barred runways leading to the actual cage. Sometimes they did not appear to want to go so trainers would goad them along with long sticks. They did not not hurt them, but kept them moving along. When in the enclosure they were free to roam about until the lion tamer wanted to work with them. If you were really fortunate, one of them would even roar.
Nowadays the greatest show on earth presents itself basically the same way, with the exception of the gigantic big top. Sometimes they will have a parade if the permits are approved. The smaller acts, but still great performers and animal acts, like the Shrine Circus, are wonderful for children and adults alike. It is still just like the days of old. Everyone can enjoy the show and somewhere there is a big top for every family, with a price to fit their budget.
Usually the performers and the big top are traveling all year to someplace, but when they 'winter over', it is likely in a warm climate such as Florida. The advantage to winter quarters in warmer climates is that everyone will be able to rehearse year round and the circus animals will be well taken care of. They certainly can enjoy the weather before they need to hit the road again to put the big show, with all the Circus Animals, out for all to see.
